Portugal

on Erasmus

First day

When we arrived, we met again portugal students and they were really friendly with us.On the first day, when we woke up we went to the Parque D.Carlos I.

It is a romantic garden that embraces the former thermal hospital, built under the ruling of D. João V. This was mainly a place for health recovery, where the patients of the thermal hospital could walk around and enjoy the soothing effect of the park.

However, in the end of the 19th century with the rise of bourgeoisie and the railway connection, the architect Berquó took charge of the thermal hospital and the park changed radically. It became a truly leisure area that included a central artificial lake, beautiful alleys, a music bandstand and police surveillance, attracting many visitors from the whole country.

Remodeled in 1950, Park D. Carlos I  was enlarged, including José Malhoa Museum and a restaurant.

It is nowadays a must-see spot of the enchanting city of Caldas da Rainha, along with the colourful fruit market and the Bordallo Pinheiro ceramics route.

After that, we met portugal students and they took us to the beach. It was really incredible, but it was really windy. Then we went to the shopping center and we ate dinner.

Third day

On the third day, after breakfast we went to the school and after that we went to school. In the afternoon we went to the Museum Jose Malhoa. This Museum shows the greatest single nucleus of works by its patron and an important collection of paintings and sculpture from the 19th and 20th centuries, considered a museum of Portuguese Naturalism art. Classified as a building  of public interest since 2002, itself becoming a "museum piece", with an excellent location in the magnificent Park D. Carlos I in Caldas da Rainha. The José Malhoa Museum building was the first in Portugal projected as a museum.  This Museum has a unique meaning in the history of our culture, revealing itself a pioneer in Portuguese museology, both for the architectural concept and for the application of principles of conservation and adaptation to the collection of paintings and sculptures that it exhibits, becoming the definitive place in the cultural history of the speciality. This visit was really intresting. After dinner we went to the thermal hospital museum. It was really amazing place with increadible history. The history of this small place in the west, which only became a city in the year 1927, was irrevocably linked to this Monarch and to the thermal baths. These thermal springs were used for therapeutic treatment and are the oldest in the world. As a result, Caldas keeps their flag and the coat of arms of Queen D. Leonor, which is a rare case since it’s said it goes against the Portuguese heraldry. The history of this small place in the west, which only became a city in the year 1927, was irrevocably linked to this Monarch and to the thermal baths.
